Lab Created does not = Fake

Updated: Mar 11, 2025

This is a topic that I see frequently on Tiktok. I'm sure alot of the sellers and even buyers will disagree with my opinions on the topic of fake vs lab created or lab treated minerals and crystals. Lab created or lab treated minerals and gems are not equal to being fake minerals and gems. There I said it. I've seen one to many Tiktok videos describing lab created/lab treated gems as fake. Most laboratories that are producing these gems are only replicating what naturally occurs as the gems form in nature. Did you know many precious gems are enhanced or lab created and although they receive hate on social media this is actually industry standard and has been so for years.

The biggest example I can provide is Citrine. The vast majority of Citrine on the market today is actually heat treated Amethyst or Smoky Quartz. (Any Citrine I offer is disclosed as natural or treated). I understand transparency is a factor when selling these gems however this was not always the case in the past.

Buyer beware! Always assume Citrine is treated unless you can distinguish them yourself or buying from a reputable dealer. Always ask and read the description of items you are purchasing. True natural Cirine is expensive so you won't be buying a 3 CT faceted Citrine for $5.

I do believe some people would be shocked to know how many gems are treated by man. This can be to get Citrine from Amethyst or to enhance the color. Treatments can also be used to clean up the appearance of a gemstone. For example laser drilling is used on Diamonds to help improve the clarity of the stones. Tourmalines and other gems may be treated to improve their color. Emeralds often have oil added to help hide inclusions. Of course when buying gems or minerals all of these things are personal preference and what your budget allows for.
